Delta ME300 vs MS300: Which Compact VFD Do You Need?

If you've already decided on a Delta drive, the next question is usually which one. The ME300 and MS300 sit in the same compact footprint, cover the same power range, and look almost identical on the shelf — but there's a real feature gap between them, and it's worth understanding before you order the cheaper one and find out later it can't do what you needed.

Why Delta?

Delta Electronics is one of the more established names in industrial motor control worldwide, and it's a brand we're happy to stand behind — reliable build quality, long service life, and a control architecture that scales from small workshop motors right up through heavy three-phase industrial loads. The ME300 and MS300 are both part of Delta's compact drive family, covering single-phase 220V and three-phase 380/400V supplies from fractional-kW up to 7.5kW and beyond.

What they have in common

Strip away the differences for a moment — across the range, both series give you:

  • The same power ratings and physical footprint, single-phase 220V or three-phase 380/400V
  • V/F and Sensorless Vector Control (SVC), for both induction motors and permanent-magnet (IPM/SPM) motors
  • The same overload profile: Normal Duty 120% for 60s / 150% for 3s, Heavy Duty 150% for 60s / 200% for 3s
  • Built-in PID control, DEB (deceleration energy backup / flying start), and momentary power-loss ride-through
  • Core protection: over-current, over-voltage, overload/overheating and phase-loss protection

For a lot of straightforward jobs — a fan, a general-purpose pump, a conveyor that just needs reliable variable-speed control — that shared feature set covers everything you actually need, which is exactly why the ME300 exists as the lower-cost option.

Where they actually differ

Two things separate the MS300 from the ME300, and both are real capability additions rather than marketing gloss:

Field-Oriented Control (FOC). The MS300 adds FOC Sensorless control on top of V/F and SVC. In practice, that means noticeably tighter speed and torque control at low speeds — the MS300's starting torque reaches 200% at 0.5Hz in FOC mode (Heavy Duty), compared with 150% at 3Hz on the ME300. If your application needs strong, precise torque right from a standstill — a loaded conveyor starting under load, for instance — that difference matters.

Built-in 2000-step PLC. The MS300 has a programmable logic controller built into the drive itself, capable enough to run simple standalone machine logic — sequencing, interlocks, basic automation — without wiring in a separate PLC. The ME300 doesn't have this; it's a drive, not a drive-plus-controller.

Everything else — the physical size, the input/output ratings, the protection suite — is shared. You're not paying more for the MS300 to get a "better built" drive; you're paying for FOC precision and on-board logic you may or may not actually need.

Which one should you choose?

Go with the ME300 if you're running general-purpose speed control — fans, pumps, conveyors, workshop machinery — where V/F or SVC control is enough and you don't need standalone logic on the drive. It's the same Delta build quality at a lower entry price.

Go with the MS300 if your application needs FOC-level torque and speed precision (loaded starts, positioning-sensitive loads), or if you want the drive to handle simple machine logic on its own without adding a separate PLC to the panel.

Sizing and phase

Both series are available across the same range: single-phase 220V from around 0.2kW up to 2.2kW, and three-phase 380/400V from around 0.4kW up to 7.5kW and beyond. As with any drive, match the rated output current to your motor's nameplate current, and confirm your site's available supply phase before ordering.

Quick FAQ

Is the MS300 just a "better" ME300? Not quite — it's not a straight upgrade in build quality, since both use the same Delta compact platform. The MS300 adds FOC control and a built-in PLC; if your application doesn't need either, the ME300 does the same job for less.

Can I swap an MS300 in later if my ME300 turns out not to be enough? Yes — both series share the same footprint and power ratings, so upgrading later is a straightforward swap rather than a re-engineering job. It's still worth sizing correctly the first time to avoid the extra cost and downtime.

Do either of these need an external PLC? Not necessarily. The MS300's built-in 2000-step PLC can handle simple standalone logic on its own. For more complex multi-drive or multi-device automation, an external PLC is still the better option — we can quote a custom control panel around either drive if that's what your application needs.
